Colorful Stippling Tutorial In The BLACKOUT Book

by Adrienne Castleton 03 Jul 2019 0 Comments

Hello friends! Adrienne from @studio80design here today to share a fun stippling tutorial you can use in your Archer and Olive The BLACKOUT Book! I remember using gel pens on black paper when I was younger, and I loved it! So when I got The BLACKOUT Book with all black pages, I knew I had to create a fun project with my gel pens! And the dot grid in the pages is an added bonus!

Materials you'll need:

Step 1

Lightly write out your quote in the center of your page with your pencil. I used my ruler to create guidelines to angle the letters.

Step 2

My quote takes up four lines on my page, and each line I'm going to use a different color gel pen. On the top line I used my purple gel pen to write the letters. Continue to write the rest of your quote, using a different color for each line.

Step 3

The gel pen creates monoline lettering, so go back and create faux-calligraphy by thickening the lines on all of the downstrokes of each letter. Then use your eraser to lightly erase any pencil lines.

Step 4

Next, I used a white gel pen to add a shadow to all the words. I created a drop right shadow for my letters.

Step 5

Now it's time to add the stippling! Keep it color-coordinated and blend the stippling together where the colors meet. Start at the top and make a dotted line around the words. Then disperse the dots out towards the edge of the page, creating a gradient effect. Be warned: this takes a lot of patience!!

Step 6

Continue stippling all the way down the page, changing the colors as you move through the lines. Blend the stippling between each line and disperse them out toward the edges.

I love how this project came together! The colors blended so well together and really pop on the black page! If you haven't already, make sure to check out The BLACKOUT Book! For more inspiration like this, make sure to follow me @studio80design!
