Hey, the crew it's Mark fromMark Your Pagesand as you may already know, I am a really big fan of fountain pens and fountain pen ink. I used to always think that you needed to use a fountain pen to enjoy ink, but recently I have been finding new ways to love and appreciate ink while not using a pen at all.
Today I'm gonna show you 3 ways and techniques to use ink in your planner and journals. Here are the materials you are going to need:
Let's get started with the first way to use ink in your journal without the need for a pen. The first way is very straight forward. Dip your paintbrush directly into the ink and use it to write out headers on your journal. For the longest time I really didn't think of ink as anything more than just pen fluid. But it is really great to use on it's own in other ways too.
By dipping you brush right into the ink, you really get the full color and can use it however you would like. Paint a small picture, draw an icon, or create your own fonts and headers. If you aren't ready to take on long form content with ink yet, try short form with page headers.
The second way that you can use ink in your journal without the need of a pen is to use it like watercolor. In the same way you dipped your brush directly into the ink, use a watercolor palette or even a sandwich bag to mix some ink with water. This will dilute the ink a little bit making the ink look lighter on the page.
What I also love about this technique is that you can treat the ink like watercolor and mix them for a beautiful effect on your pages. Be sure to not use too much water or it could soak through your page. Use it quickly allowing the inks to mix and let it dry, or use a heat gun to speed up the process.
The third way to use fountain pen ink in your journal without the need or a pen is to add some ink and water to a water brush. This is similar to the previous 2 tips, but gives you a continuous color in your brush. You can also use the waterbrush for longer periods of time so you don't need to continue to dip and remix your colors and inks.
Now that you have learned a few techniques put them to good use by trying them out in a new weekly spread or collection page. Here is an example of how I used the ink mixing, using the ink like watercolor - along with using my water brush pen to make headers. This makes for a wonderfully colorful page.
Be sure to continue to practice and experiment with different types of inks. If you don't have any already, you can head to your local stationery shop to buy some small bottles or you can even find some on Amazon.
