How To: Lemon Theme + 5 Fun Tropical Themes For The Summer!

by Nabaa Afridi 24 Jul 2019 0 Comments

Hello everyone! This is Nabaa from @whimsical.doodles bringing you fresh summery goodness! It's officially summer and what better way to enjoy the climate than by staying indoors, doodling? Haha, I kid! Regardless of how you spend it, summer is a fun time for many! I, for one, am super excited to translate this into my journal!

For my own summer theme, I decided to do lemons! Bright, flavourful and vibrant - lemon’s are one of my favorite things to doodle!

Materials Recommended:

  • Archer and Olive Journal - Can I just say...WOW! I've used a couple of journals over the last couple of years but these are on a whole another level! Beautiful exterior with thick white pages that ensure no bleeding/ghosting!
  • Your favorite coloring supplies! - With tropical themes, it's all about bright bold colors. I used a brush marker set but with the Archer and Olive journal, you could use any medium you want really. Pens, markers, acrylics, watercolor - the world is your oyster!
  • Fineliners
  • Pencil and Eraser
  • Kraft Paper

Let's start! To create this spread, I first penciled in simple lemon shapes. You start by drawing two curved lines. Then simply connect the ends with a deformed U shape! And that's how easy it is!

The real fun comes in when you begin adding color. I chose a bright yellow and light orange for these lemons. Start by first coloring in the yellow and going over one edge with the orange. This helps give definition and make your lemons pop on your page.

I then added in finishing touches by going over the lemons with a fineliner. Here, I chose not to outline them exactly but to offset a little for a more "whimsical" look (see what I did there?). Stipple in a few dots over the darker side of your lemon, add in leaves where needed, and you're set!

If you've been following me, you'll know I absolutely adore working with kraft paper! It makes everything look so much more pretty! So to finish this setup, I added in a piece of kraft paper with "July" lettered in white!
