Useful Spread Ideas for Your Recipe Bullet Journal

by Design Team 29 Jul 2021 0 Comments

Hey-lo! Marsha here from Do You Salut! I like to have my recipes in a separate bullet journal all to itself, that way I don’t have to go through all of my weekly and monthly spreads in order to get to a recipe. Today we’re going to explore some of the many spread ideas you can add to your recipe journal.

Recommended Supplies:

  • B6 journal or A5 dot grid journal ( I personally love the B6 size. It’s portable and won’t get in the way while I’m recipe testing in the kitchen).
  • Pen/pencil

Check out this video of recipe spread ideas.

1. Recipes

The first spread idea is the most obvious… recipes! Using a neapolitan journal can be helpful if you want to keep your recipes according to categories. For example, one section for cocktails, another for salads, cookies, etc. See my cocktail blog here!

2. Dry or Weight Measurements

measurement conversions - dry

One of the best things about the internet is that we have access to recipes from all over the world. If you live in the US but are looking at recipes from pretty much the rest of the world you might get confused with the gram measurements.  Creating this spread can be a quick guide for your dry ingredient conversions.  For example if a recipe calls for 454 grams of flour, your chart will let you know that is equal to 1 pound of flour.

3. Liquid or Volume Measurements

Liquid measurements can be confusing too. Luckily creating a spread for volume measurements can be equally as helpful.  If you misplaced your measuring cups but have your tablespoons handy you can use the tablespoons. For example if the recipe calls for ½ cup you can use 8 tablespoons instead.

4. Egg  & Sugar Alternatives

egg substitutions

If you have an egg allergy or are trying to reduce your sugar intake using substitutes or alternatives can help. (It’s also helpful if you run out of an ingredient but don’t feel like running out to the store.) Did you know that you can use mashed banana or pureed avocado to replace eggs? You can also replace eggs with applesauce. Applesauce muffins were my favorite thing to bake. It's also important to know how much to use for sugar alternatives. For example if cooking with stevia you only need 1 teaspoon to replace 1 cup of sugar!

5. Recipes to Try

Another great spread to add to your recipe book is…. A recipe to try list! What better location to keep track of all the recipes that you want to try? You can have it as an ongoing list or you can have different categories per page.

What would you add in your recipe book? Perhaps a key or index? Liquor substitutes for cocktails. A rating spread of recipes tried?  Are you ready to hit the kitchen?
